So you’ve found your perfect gown and after excitedly waiting for it’s arrival its finally here. You’ve returned to try it on and love it just as much as the day you first tried it on but it’s not quite ready for your big day yet. It’s time for alterations…
Pretty much all bridal gowns are made in standard sizes (to the designers own size chart so not high street sizes) and lengths so they will likely need some alterations as everyone is a unique size. The most common alterations needed are a pinch on the bodice so the dress fits neatly against your body and the hem taking up so you can walk easily without tripping.
Sometimes though you may need a few more alterations with the dress taking in at the waist, hips or sometimes all down the bodice depending on your body shape and how you compare to the standard size chart. Some brides like to make changes to their gown, from making the train smaller to adding sleeves or changing skirt shapes. Not that any of these alterations are ever a problem as at Jdezire, Wendy and I are both skilled seamstresses and we have another very skilled seamstress who we work with too. So when you purchase your Jdezire bridal gown you can feel safe in the knowledge that we will only advise what we know can be done and will look fabulous.
The alteration process
You will have your first fitting at Jdezire about 6-8 weeks before your big day where we will pin your gown to mark what alterations will be done. The alterations will then be completed ready for you to return about 2-4 weeks before your wedding so we can check everything is fitting correctly. On the odd occasion that additional alterations may be required these will be completed and further appointments arranged.
Please do remember to bring your shoes and bra (that you will be wearing with your wedding dress on the day) with you to all fittings. It’s amazing how much difference there can be in fit and length between different bras and heel heights so if we alter to a substitute your gown may not fit right with your actual items.
To avoid getting your dress dirty before your big day it is a good idea to be sparing with make-up on fitting days and please, no fake tan.
As we need our full concentration for your fitting we advise not to bring too many people or small children with you. We also politely request you arrive promptly for your fitting as it can be quite time consuming to pin your gown and it’s best not to be rushed at this stage. Equally there may not be time at fittings to try on accessories but if you visit during the week (when we have a bit more time) please ask before we start pinning you gown if you wish to look at our accessories.
Saturdays are not the best day for fittings as the shop is very busy and we have slightly less time than in the week. We do offer a limited amount of Saturday fitting appointments, usually once a fortnight, but these may not always be available so it may be a good idea to keep a day or two of holiday available if required so you can have your fittings on a weekday.
